NURSING CONTINUING EDUCATION

Nurses are the foundation of the medical community. Doctors, specialists, and researchers are of vital importance to accomplish the many areas of expertise required to keep the world as healthy as possible, but the nurses are the foundation that much of the rest of the medical field builds on. Since the need for nurses is so great in so many areas of medicine, it becomes even more crucial for nursing continuing education to be a part of that career. All states require nurses to participate in continuing courses to refresh, revitalize, and renew their knowledge, as well as, expound their knowledge in new areas as related to their career field. Some continuing education courses are offered free of charge by hospitals, research facilities, and large corporations. However, the majority of the continuing education courses are at a cost to the individual nurse or to the clinic, company, or medical facility where they are employed.

Nursing continuing education courses are specifically designed courses with a definite syllabus. These courses cannot be random and generalized without a plan in place. Therefore, the continuing education courses are usually recognized by one or more of an organization developed to maintain the quality of education being provided. Some of these organizations include the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, Competency and Credentialing Institute, the Emergency Nurses Association, the Forensic Nurses Certification Board, the National Certification Corporation, and the Oncology Nursing Certification Board.

Nurses are in their field to earn a living, but many nurses will share that they choice that field because they want to help people in a very real and positive manner. Anyone who has suffered a lengthy illness or hospital stay would agree that the quality of nursing care can be very frustrating or very meaningful. As nurses continue to help people, they will continue to grasp more knowledge through nursing continuing education.
