INSURANCE CONTINUING EDUCATION
Insurance is a booming business. Specialists in insurance are necessary to provide good counsel to individuals or businesses for adequate coverage and choices. Insurance laws and requirements change frequently and it is necessary for insurance agents to stay informed about the changes and how those affect their clientele. Each state has their own procedures and requirements and insurance continuing education must fall under the requirements of the state where the insurance agent is licensed.
Insurance continuing education is a necessary part of being a licensed insurance agent. Thirty hours of continuing education are required every two years in Texas. The continuing education hours vary from state to state. Two of these credit hours must be in ethics. Fifty percent of the continuing education credit hours must be taken in classroom or classroom equivalent courses. Classroom equivalent courses are online and interactive courses and are available to the insurance agent at their discretion and within their own schedule. Some self-study courses are accepted. The courses must meet the requirements of the state in which the insurance agent is licensed. Also, the courses must be in the field in which the license is categorized --- property/casualty and life/health. If a course is failed, the agent must wait two years before repeating the specific course, but there are plenty of course choices to fulfill the continuing education requirement.
Some of the courses of study for insurance continuing education include
IRAs, 401k plans, annuities, charitable trusts, ethics, business insurance, estate planning, retirement planning, group insurance and social security, health insurance, liability insurance, property insurance, risk management, homeowners insurance, auto insurance, and workers compensation.
Property/casualty and life/health are the general categories of insurance specialists. The insurance agent must select their continuing education courses from the general category in which they are licensed. This is necessary because the broad spectrum of insurance covers more information that most agents are comfortable, or licensed, to handle.
