Baby boomers remember the long classes in driver education where facts and figures were memorized and graphic films were shown on a small projector, the seven oclock summer morning meetings with the coach for driving lessons, and the stress of taking the written and driving tests at the drivers license office. Things have certainly changed. Now, first time drivers and teens can sit at their computer in their own home and participate in an interactive course that teaches the rules of the road, specific traffic laws to their home state, and important driving techniques and objectives. This prepares the new driver, if they are at least sixteen years of age, for the written driving test, or the learners permit test. In some states, this test can be taken online and the driving portion of the test can be administered by a parent or an adult with a valid drivers license in that state.
In Texas, the driver education online is a course approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Internet technology allows the course to be taught through the use of text, audio, graphics, and video, thus assuring the student can understanding the material in multiple mediums.
In New York, the driver education online contains six hours of training which includes eight videos. Upon completion of the course, there are three practice exams available and the student takes one of the exams. Once a practice exam has been passed, the learners permit exam is administered.
