DISTANCE EDUCATION DEGREE
Distance education has multiple explanations. It can mean learning about distance places and experiencing the differences in cultures and climates in other regions or countries. It could also possibly mean commuting a great distance to receive an education. However, the current understanding of the phrase distance education parallels online education. Therefore, as we discuss distance education degree, we will adopt that definition.
The first part of the equation to a distance education degree is the student. The student makes the decision to further their education through distance learning. The student then works on a specific degree plan that has been developed by the school of choice to fit the criteria for the desired degree within the time and framework of the students schedule. The student then has the added benefit of working from their home or office on the assignments as instructed and has access online, by mail, or by telephone to the wisdom of the instructors for the courses being taken. Also, many resources are made available to the distance learning student through the schools library or research facilities.
The next part of the equation is the educational institution that is providing the curriculum, the instructor, and eventually, the degree to the student who has completed the required course work. An agreement has been made by the institution with the student to provide a service, at a cost, to allow the student to complete the desired degree plan.
Another part of the equation is the instructor assigned to the distance education degree student. While it would be easy to assume this instructor sits in a classroom and teaches all day on a campus site, it may be that the instructor is also distance. Some schools contract with instructors who do not actually work on site, but teach distance learning students from the comfort of their own homes.
The equation becomes complete when all of these parts are put together: student + school + instructor = distance education degree.
